Sassy Magazine, widely considered to be way ahead of its time, would have turned 30 years old this year. Founded in 1988, Sassy quickly became the cultural touchstone for teen girls who were slightly left of center, like myself. Sassy covered fashion, music, culture, politics, celebrities and more, but did it to their own beat, defining a generation of '90s girls and inspiring bolder glossies like Teen Vogue.
When its founding editor, Jane Pratt, left the magazine in 1994, loyal readers were heartbroken. Pratt went on to launch Jane Magazine, taking her voice, vision and staff with her. In 1996, Sassy ceased publication.
So, let’s take this opportunity to celebrate Sassy and all the amazing things it did.
