I'm sorry, have we transported back in time to 2008?
Taylor Swift's "Fearless" album is on the horizon, I spend my evenings writing in my diary journal and all I want to wear is sweatsuits and UGG boots. 2021 must have gotten lost on its way to rescue us. (Note: not complaining.) Might as well lean into it, right?
Let's start with the UGGs. The brand blew up when middle schoolers the world over donned their boots, with their ultra-simplistic designs, fuzzy interiors and even more simplistic colors. You could get fancy, sure, and get the knee-high ones versus the mid-calf, or opt for the pairs that looked like sweaters (not my personal favorite), but the UGGs were identifiable from a mile away.
UGG has grown with their target market, though, offering newer, trendier footwear options like slingback slippers and chunky sneakers. But now that good ol' COVID-19 has rendered us housebound for the better parts of our weeks, we find ourselves migrating back to those standard, pull-on, tried-and-true boots. And we know why: They're like warm hugs for your feet, and we need all the comfort we can get these days.
I don't know about all of you, but in the thick of quarantine, if I had to take leave from my couch for any reason, I was opting for quick and comfortable ensembles. So, when temperatures dropped and slide sandals were no longer an option, I inevitably dug my war-torn chestnut UGGs out from the back of my closet. And they haven't been put away since.
The greater population seemed to feel the same way, so much so that UGG has seen a resurgence in the fashion world. Supermodels are out on the streets in their UGGs and chart-topping singers are posting Instagram photos in them, too.
The newest "it" UGGs, though, aren't the slippers, slides or the like; it's the once-popular, regular boot, but in the ankle-length cut. They pair well with the typical quarantine uniform of leggings or joggers, so it makes sense.
Plus, everyone knows that if TikTok is on something in any way, shape or form, it's automatically cool -- and they're on it. Last month, the Gen Zers were cutting up their longer-length boots to turn them into slippers, I guess to make them more stylish and wearable again. (Maybe they didn't know that UGG already makes this style?) Regardless, I rest my case.
So, go ahead! Slip on your UGGs, power up your iPod and settle in for a few more weeks of winter.
