At the turn of the twentieth century, Pirbhai, a teenager,
is taken from his village in India by the British to work on the railway. After
he commits a desperate act, it haunts him and has consequences for future generations
of his family. After his grandchildren flee from Uganda and scatter across the
world, a letter finds them and brings up the past once again.
