1. “Below” - Netflix
Hollywood hunk Josh Hartnett trades dry land for the deep in this six-episode thriller set in a remote fishing village in Newfoundland. When a mysterious sea creature begins terrorizing the town, Hartnett and his family are forced to face the secrets lurking below the surface. Co-starring Mackenzie Davis and “Stranger Things” alum Charlie Heaton, it’s a fast-paced, atmospheric show you can binge in one sitting.
2. “Crystal Lake” - Peacock
Before the hockey mask Jason we know, there was his mom Pamela. This “Friday the 13th” prequel from A24 stars Linda Cardellini as Pam Voorhees, a grieving mother still reeling from her son Jason’s drowning at Camp Crystal Lake. When two strangers show up asking questions about her past, things take a very dark turn. This is a series made in 70’s slasher-style, so a forewarning: it’s not suitable if gore is not your thing.
3. “Carrie” - Amazon Prime Video
Mike Flanagan, who is infamous for his horror adaptations, reimimagines Stephen King’s debut novel. Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, with Flanagan regulars like Kate Siegel and Rahul Kohli making appearances. You can watch this contemporary spin on the classic on Amazon Prime Video.
4. “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” - Netflix
You know how the famous rhyme goes, ““Lizzie Borden took an axe…,” but Ryan Murphy’s look into the story takes an even deeper (if, at times, fictionalized) look at the case. While this is technically the fourth installment of “Monster,” a true crime anthology, it is the first to center on a female killer, with Ella Beatty starring as the infamous Lizze Borden who was tried, and acquitted, for the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother. Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall and Sarah Paulson are all a part of the cast in this dark, eight-episode retelling.
5. “Phony” - Hulu/Disney+
Sam Nivola stars in this new Hulu show where a teenage boy wakes up from a car accident, convinced his mom has been replaced by an impostor. Described as “Freaks and Geeks” trapped in “The Twilight Zone,” it’s the lightest pick on this list, but no less unsettling.
