1. "The Intrigue" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
A simple con gets complicated in this book from “Mexican
Gothic” author Moreno-Garcia. Ulises is good at charming women out of their
money in 1940s Mexico and Perla, a boardinghouse owner in Veracruz, is his next
mark. Her crafty niece Inés discovers the plan and wants in. Ulises will marry
Perla, get the money and they’ll vanish, but Perla’s not the rube Ulises
assumes her to be and Inés is more than he bargained for as well. This
wasn’t the plan.
