1. "Country People" by Daniel Mason
When Miles’ wife gets a job at a college in Vermont, he
sees it as a way to start over after a long, failed attempt at a PhD on Russian folktales.
Miles soon falls in with a mythical-seeming crowd itself, including a ghostly
tree surgeon to a photographer of snowflakes. Better yet, an absurd local legend
may be true and Miles is far from home but maybe finding where he belongs for
the first time.
