1. Big Sur, California
Writers like Jack Kerouac and Henry
Miller found inspiration here amongst the dramatic oceanside cliffs. Kick back
with the gorgeous coastal scenery or check out one of the many state parks for
leisurely hikes and the beaches for shell hunting. Rent a cottage right on the
Pacific Coast Highway overlooking the ocean and see if you can spot gray whales
in the distance.
2. Asheville, North Carolina
Resist the urge to visit all 50
breweries or see Renoir paintings at the Biltmore estate, because you’re here to
relax. There are beautiful hikes, wildflower gazing in the Blue Ridge
Mountains and a charming downtown if you absolutely must do something. Get a
mountain cottage right outside of town to be closest to nature.
3. Taos, New Mexico
This small artistic community has traditional adobe buildings and a gorgeous view of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Stay in a
cozy casita, flipping through art books in the garden while sipping an agave
cocktail. Maybe find inspiration in the landscape for your next project. The
colors of a southwestern sunset alone are a palette to savor, but the food here
at the little cafés is great, too.
4. Maui, Hawaii
Hawaiian islands have so much to explore, but if you’re going to be a beach bum,
do it in the most stunning place possible. Snorkel, I guess, but rotting on
the beach while drinking from a pineapple is the way to go.
5. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Gazing out at the Teton Mountain
range during the day may be enough, but do some stargazing at night too, as Teton
County is an International Dark Sky Community. Rent a condo with mountain views
and maybe watch the deer and antelope play in your very own home on the range.
6. Nantucket, Massachusetts
Books are just better here on this quiet New England island
and whatever you read on the beach will be magical. All you need is a chair,
your Kindle and a little sunscreen for the most chill day in the sand.
7. Sedona, Arizona
Sedona is said to have good energy
— mystical, almost. Just sitting in one of the known vortexes is said to have
therapeutic benefits for mind and body. There are plenty of spas around offering
treatments like sound baths and crystal therapy, bringing the art of doing nothing
to new heights.
8. Lake Tahoe, Nevada
Try not to pay attention to all of
the activities at your disposal, from snowmobiling in the winter to kayaking
in the summer. You’re here for luxuriating in an elite cabin and becoming a prune
in the lake.
9. Bar Harbor, Maine
What’s our perfect day? Oh, thanks
for asking. It would be sitting on the lawn of Jordan Pond House, eating
popovers while sipping a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc while just watching
nature happen around. We could do this all day, seriously.
