Tomato season is peaking right now, and the TikTok chefs are absolutely on it. But rather than chopping up their heirlooms for refreshing summer salads, gazpacho or fancy salsa, the trend right now? Tomato flights.
This summer, we’re taking a page out of your favorite microbrewery’s book and creating heirloom tomato flights — all you have to do is slice thick slabs of the biggest, juiciest heirloom tomatoes you can find (bonus points if you grew them yourself) and top them with your favorite flavor combinations.
The trend started out simple enough: a flight with caprese-, Greek salad- and Italian sub-inspired variations; another utilizing hummus with cucumbers, eggs and chives and avocado “toast” versions; another keeping it traditional with cottage cheese and herby veggie toppings; and the like.
And then it got a little more extravagant, with folks topping their thick tomato slices with things like full In-N-Out burgers, peaches with burrata, spicy tuna concoctions, Peking duck with hoisin (!?!?!) and turkey with kettle-baked potato chips.
I mean, drool.
Some other yummy toppings we think you should try out? Prosciutto and hot honey, ricotta with basil and scrambled eggs and feta cheese. Just don’t forget the flaky salt!
