1. Rechargeable Hand Warmers
Rechargeable hand warmers are clever devices that you can keep on hand, literally, to restore warmth to your fingertips. Just be sure to wear mittens or gloves, too, to protect your skin.
2. Mittens
Whether you opt for hand warmers or not, make sure you have a thick, warm, moisture-wicking pair of mittens or gloves to protect your skin from cold temperatures and bitter winds.
3. Wool Socks
Wool socks are a must-have for staying warm in the winter, because they not only help retain warmth in your feet, but they also wick away moisture, keeping your feet from feeling cold and damp.
4. Waterproof Snow Boots
To give your moisture-wicking socks a boost, don’t forget to wear a thick, warm pair of snow boots that are waterproof. When snow gets into your pants or shoes, it will rapidly cool you down, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear for better heat retention.
5. Balaclava
While you can wear a hat and scarf, a balaclava may be better suited for walking and hiking in winter weather. This one-piece head covering can protect your head, face, and neck all at once, so there’s less time spent adjusting a scarf or hat.
6. Fleece-Lined Pants
While you should wear layered bottoms, and not just a single pair of pants, be sure one of those layers is a pair of fleece-lined pants. Layered over long johns and under snow pants, these perform well at retaining body heat and keeping your legs warm as you walk.
7. Moisture-Wicking Base Layer
Like with the wool socks, be sure to choose long johns or other base layers that will wick moisture away from the skin. Wool is a top choice, or you can choose synthetic materials designed with moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties.
8. Warm, Comfy Middle Layer
Over the base layer, choose a thick, comfortable middle layer that will offer an additional barrier from the cold. Plus, if for some reason you do run hot during your walk, this layer allows you to remove the top layer while still keeping warm.
9. Water-Resistant Outer Layer
Finally, top off the whole set with a water-resistant top layer to help shed away snow and sleet. Throw on snow pants and a water-resistant coat, and you’re ready to face the snowy, winter weather comfortably.
