1. Nara
What Nara is famous for: deer, deer, deer. Over 1,000 wild Sika
deer roam the town, centered at Nara Park. Considered sacred messengers of the
gods, the deer will bow to you for special deer crackers sold in the park (but
can get a little overexcited and nip you so proceed with caution). But that’s
not all: Located only 45 minutes from Kyoto, Tōdai-ji is an equally impressive Buddhist temple complex featuring the largest bronze Buddha statue in
the world. The Nara National Museum has Buddhist art, including statues and
scrolls. Kasuga Taisha Shrine has thousands of stone and bronze lanterns
leading to the shrine and Isuien Gardens is a peaceful walking garden with tea
houses for a light meal or cup of matcha.
