1. Pixar
Pixar has a full slate of new movies, including sequels to
beloved films and brand new adventures. First up is “Incredibles 3,” coming
June 2028, focusing on Violent and Dash growing up. Frozone, Edna Mode and
their parents will be back as well. “Coco 2” arrives in 2029 with a grown-up
Miguel and Benjamin Bratt returning as a vengeful Ernesto de la Cruz. New
movies include “Ghost Market” in 2028, about a ghost realm, and “Gatto” in
March 2027, about a black cat in Venice.
2. Kingdom Hearts
Two big things are coming for fans of Kingdom Hearts, the
Disney-themed role-playing action video game. First up, "Coco" is coming to
Kingdom Hearts IV with the vibrant Land of the Dead setting. The game should arrive in
2027 while a Kingdom Hearts animated TV series is in development for Disney+.
3. The Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Studios
Sequels
abound for Disney film arms, The Walt Disney Studios and 20th
Century Studios. "Frozen 3," coming November 2027, will feature Anna, Elsa and
Olaf, but also Olaf’s friend — Samantha! After the successful "Zootopia 2," "Zootopia
3" has been greenlit and is underway. A sequel to the live action "Lilo &
Stitch" is coming summer 2028 with Angel, Stitch’s pink love interest. D23 attendees
got a peek at the live action "Tangled," with Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo
Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. The movie hits theaters
in March 2028. Anne Hathaway, a newly minted Disney Legend, confirmed "The Princess
Diaries 3" is in development. A new Simpsons movie will premiere in September
2027 while the new Ice Age film, subtitled "Boiling Point," gathers Manny, Ellie,
Sid, Diego and Scrat together to explore the Lost World, coming February 2027!
Bluey and Bingo will hit the big screen with the "The Bluey Movie" in August,
2027, and “Romy and Michele” will finally get a sequel on Hulu, also in 2027.
4. Disney+ Shows and Live Theater
Premiering right around the corner in November, "Percy
Jackson and the Olympians" Season 3 will introduce the Hunters of Artemis. Based
on "The Titan’s Curse" novel, it will also show Atlas and more members of the
Olympian council. An old-timey deep-cut in the Disney character library, Oswald
the Lucky Rabbit will be the star of a new animated series by Jon Favreau, arriving
February 2027. The show combines live action with 2D animation. And coming to London’s
Theatre Royal Drury Lane in spring 2027 is a stage
adaptation of "The Greatest Showman," featuring songs from the movie as well as
new tunes from Pasek & Paul.
5. Star Wars
Ryan Gosling already made a splash at San Diego Comic-Con with
the announcement he will star in a new "Ghost Rider" movie for Marvel, but at
D23, it was announced that he’s also joining the Star Wars universe as Kade
Auberon in "Star Wars: Starfighter." This original story, set five years after "The Rise of Skywalker" hits theaters May 28, 2027. Meanwhile, "Ahsoka" Season 2,
starring Rosario Dawson as the rebel leader, streams on Disney+ in January,
2027!
6. Marvel Studios
After years of development, "VisionQuest," the Paul
Bettany-led show about the synthezoid with a heart, showed its first trailer,
co-starring James Spader as Ultron. The show features Vision finding out the
truth about his son after the events in "WandaVision." The series premieres on Disney+ in October
2026. "Avengers: Doomsday" stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell
showed footage for the new film while Deadpool and Wolverine (Ryan Reynolds and
Hugh Jackman) crashed the party (again) looking for roles. The biggest news
from D23 had to be the cast of the upcoming X-Men film, arriving in May 2028. The
stars of the film are Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher
Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde
Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will play the part of
the villainous Mister Sinister.
7. EPCOT
EPCOT has two big refurbishments coming up, both with are centered on the park's fan favorites. After years of begging, fans will finally get a Journey Into
Imagination redo, which will reunite the beareded Dreamfinder with his pal Figment. Also,
Spaceship Earth will have a full reimagining to focus on the human connection
instead of just communication. Guests will still ride through history, but the
attraction will no longer be so outdated.
8. Hollywood Studios
After the bulldozing of Muppets Courtyard last year, we’ve
been anxiously waiting for an update to its replacement, Monstropolis. The
Monsters Inc.-themed land will open in 2027, featuring a Door Vault suspended
coaster (a first for Disney) and a new stage show with a song by Randy Newman.
Two new eateries, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza and Harryhausen’s, a sushi
restaurant, will only add to the immersive feel of the land.
9. Animal Kingdom
The most plentiful park news definitely hails from Animal
Kingdom with the opening of Tropical Americas, a new land, in 2027. Replacing Dinoland,
the fresh area features Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, taking guests into Antonio’s
rainforest room with more than 50 animal figures and audio animatronics. El
Carousel de los Animalitos features 22 Disney-inspired animals. Harrison Ford
will model for the new Indiana Jones ride, Myth of the Jade Serpent, also set
in the Tropical Americas. Lastly, the Disco Yeti is finally getting a
well-deserved restoration back to its original form so it will move and not be
just a B-mode strobe affect, as it’s been since 2007.
10. Magic Kingdom
Announced earlier this year, the Carousel of Progress in
Tomorrowland will be thoroughly updated, with Bryan Cranston providing the
voice of John and Jamie Lee Curtis as Sarah. There will be new scenes, but “There’s
a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” will be preserved. Meanwhile, Piston Peak, the
new Cars land, is coming along nicely, though no opening date has been set.
Guests can look forward to Cars Ridge Run Rally, a race through mountains and
geysers, while Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along will be a family-focused
spinning attraction. Villains Land is also underway with a Maleficent roller
coaster and a Magic Mirror-hosted dark ride. There will also be dining, shopping and villainous meet and greets.
11. Disneyland
A long time coming, Tomorrowland in Disneyland is getting a
full reimagination with new attractions, open spaces and a focus on optimism,
innovation and imagining the future. A major undertaking, this project will likely
take years.
12. California Adventure
Coco is coming to Disney California Adventure. A family-friendly
boat ride, it will take guests through the Land of the Dead on a new adventure celebrating
Día de los Muertos with Miguel and
Héctor. The new Avengers Campus rides—Stark Flight Lab and Avengers: Infinity
Defense—open in 2028.
