I went to Hawaii for the first time this month, and even though my arms are still attractively peeling from a sunburn and I clocked in about 28 hours worth of air miles, I’d go back in a second.
That being said, I definitely have some advice for and traveler’s tales from vacationing on Oahu. Even though it holds the hub of Honolulu, don’t let it fool you -- a much more “Hawaiian” experience, if you will, comes from traveling an hour and a half outside of Honolulu’s hotel-centric Waikiki to the North Shore of Oahu.
A straight shot and easy drive from the city, the North Shore really only consists of a few small towns and otherwise isn’t accessible by any roads. You take one highway in and the same highway out. Basically, if you’re outside of Honolulu and not skirting the perimeter of the island, you’re walking through mountains in Oahu.
The following is my argument to spend more time on the North Shore than in Honolulu -- not that you’ll need convincing after seeing these photos.
