UPDATE 8/22/16: Some of the smoke has cleared and Ryan Lochte has officially admitted to making up the story about he and his fellow Team U.S.A swimmers being robbed at gunpoint. Now, he is trying to come clean to the public and to news sources. Lochte sat down with NBC's Matt Lauer to discuss the situation, where he apologized and took "full responsibility" for his and his teammates' actions.
It's not all sunshine and rainbows here on out for this Olympic medalist, though. As of Monday, four companies said that they would be ending their partnerships with Lochte. Speedo USA, Ralph Lauren, the mattress company Airweave and Syneron Candela, a company that sells hair-removal devices, all said they would be parting ways with the swimmer.
UPDATE 8/19/16: Now that it's clear the swimmers fabricated the story, Lochte has released an apology on social media. In the post, he takes responsibility for his mistakes and expresses his regrets regarding his behavior.
Back up, what's happened?
Early Sunday afternoon, August 14, reports from Rio claimed that U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte, along with teammates Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz, were robbed at gunpoint while on their way back to the Olympic Village from Club France, the French hospitality area. According to a statement from Lochte, the swimmers got into a cab on their way home when they were pulled over by thieves pretending to be cops. Since then, there has been some speculation about what actually happened that day, and Lochte and the rest of his teammates have been ordered by a Brazilian judge to remain in Rio for further questioning.
