I’ll admit it: I was today-years-old when I realized that John
David Washington -- the handsome star of "BlacKkKlansman," "Tenet" and the
upcoming "Malcolm & Marie" -- is the son of mega-star Denzel Washington. It all
makes sense now -- good looks, skilled acting chops and that unmistakable
Washington charisma. I should have known. Luckily, I’m in the company of lots
of other people who have also had similar, shocking realizations on Twitter as
to the relationships between various celebs.
Every day, you can watch tons of people tweet what you
already knew. It makes you feel simultaneously smug for getting there first,
plus, watching their journey catching up to where you are is hilarious.
Tomorrow, I'll log on to Twitter to say, "Of course John David Washington and Denzel are related! Duh!"
Washington isn’t the only celeb sparking major learning on
Twitter. With the premiere of "WandaVision" on Disney+, people are realizing that star
Elizabeth Olsen’s last name is familiar for a reason. She not only has personal
experience growing up with twins, but she plays one and is the mother of twins on TV.
Also trending is the 10th anniversary of LMFAO’s
album "Sorry for Party Rocking," including their hit single "Party Rock Anthem." With this trend comes the major revelation, 10 years after their sudden stardom
and nine years after they broke up, that the band was not a couple of bros, but
in fact an uncle and nephew duo.
That’s right -- Redfoo was born Stephen Gordy, son to Motown Records
founder Berry Gordy Jr. His bandmate Sky Blu (Skyler Gordy) is his brother
Berry Gordy IV’s son. The former duo are 11 years apart.
Furthermore, Redfoo has another famous family member: Rockwell, singer of the 1984 hit "Somebody's Watching Me," is his half-brother!
This family tree extends further, into both the Jackson
family (via Jermaine Jackson) and the Ross family (as in Diana and Tracee Ellis
Ross), but I’ll stop there before too many minds get blown.
LMFAO is not the only band of uncles and nephews. The members of Migos, an
Atlanta rap group known for hits like "Bad and Boujee," are all related. The three of them -- Quavo, Takeoff and Offset -- were all raised together by Quavo’s mother. Quavo is
uncle to Takeoff and cousins with Offset. Offset is currently married to Cardi
B.
Dakota Johnson is making major news for her recent bombshell
that she hates limes, after leading us to believe she kept big bowls of the
citrus around her house. What’s most shocking to many, however, is the realization
that she has famous parents.
Wait until people find out that Antonio Banderas is her
step-father and Tippi Hedren is her grandmother.
Yes, for the millionth time, Julia Roberts and Emma Roberts ("American
Horror Story") are aunt and niece. Basically everyone in Hollywood is related.
Celeb kids are everywhere, because it really depends on who
you know to get ahead in the biz.
But every now and then, people get it horribly, terribly wrong.
And that is the best realization of all.
(Hint: that’s not Jane Lynch, and Ross is not her son!)
And if some of these connections are news to you, too, don’t
feel bad. We all have to start somewhere. But, you’re already way more knowledgeable
than all the people on Twitter who are about to discover all of these facts
tomorrow!
