One of my fondest memories from childhood is riding the bus home from school and watching "The Oprah Winfrey Show" with my mom. Even before I became a journalist, she would point to the TV and say "Look Hun, Oprah started out from nothing and see where she is now? Maybe that will be you someday!" (Ironic, huh?)
If you know anything about Ms. Winfrey's past, you know that she describes her childhood not as growing up "poor," but growing up "po--" because they couldn't even afford the second part of the word. She is the ultimate rags to riches story, from growing up in rural Mississippi to now being one of the wealthiest and most successful women in the world.
Following Oprah's now-iconic speech while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at Sunday night's Golden Globes, many fans of the former talk show host feel that she should consider running for president in 2020. Although she insisted on "CBS This Morning" last October that "there will be no running for office of any kind" for her, multiple "sources" are telling the press that she is actively considering a run. One of the most unlikely sources? None other than her longtime partner, Stedman Graham.
"It's up to the people," Graham told a Los Angeles Times reporter following the Golden Globes. "She would absolutely do it."
Oprah's partner-in-crime and resident BFF Gayle King also commented on a potential presidential run, and attempted to clear the air following Graham's remarks.
"I absolutely don’t think that her position has changed," King told "CBS This Morning." "I do think she’s intrigued by the idea. I also know after years of watching the Oprah show, you always have a right to change your mind. I don’t think, at this point, she’s actually considering it.
I love Oprah. I think she is brilliant and talented and sweet and kind and everything that we could ever hope to have in the person running our great country. But I do not think she should run for president, and here's why.
