It's official: it looks like we'll now eat just about anything, as long as it looks good in a pre-meal Instagram post. Or so that seems to be the case with the new unicorn ramen bowl flooding our social media feeds as of late.
Head over to Kipposhi in Tokyo and you can get a bright blue bowl of broth, complete with veggies, a salted egg and roasted chicken. The broth's unique color comes from spirulina algae, which is supposed to have a whole bunch of superpowers that make you feel great. So I guess that means this is a healthy trend, at least.
The funny part is that Kipposhi doesn't even market this algae ramen as "unicorn" anything. Instead, Instagrammers picked up on its unique color right on the tails of the unicorn latte trend and renamed it themselves. Kipposhi just wanted to serve a nutrient-packed ramen bowl and in the process accidentally dove headfirst into a growing food trend.
Whether you love food trends or can't help but sigh and roll your eyes at them, this really comes down to taste. Although I haven't packed my bags and travelled to Japan to try this ramen myself, I can't imagine that it's any less than amazing. After all, I've yet to meet a bowl of ramen that I didn't love, and the use of chicken instead of the traditional pork sounds tasty. But you definitely won't catch me ordering "the unicorn ramen" if and when I ever make it out to Kipposhi.
