The 2016 Paralympics are going on right now, giving us 11 more days to cheer on our Team U.S.A. athletes. There's no denying the physical prowess of these competitors (um, hello, have you seen some of their crazy workout routines?), but it can be confusing to someone unfamiliar with the games to see competitors with vastly different impairments going head to head. So how does the Paralympic committee figure out who competes against who exactly? Good question -- the answer lies in a perpetually evolving classification system that aims to objectively place Paralympians in competition groups with similarly impaired athletes, regardless of whether or not these classes look evenly matched.
