It only takes one person to seize power when a town hall meeting (think the lowest tier of government aside from a neighborhood association) gets heated, and that's exactly what Cheshire, England resident Jackie Weaver did.
Weaver was part of a Dec. 2020 Handforth Parish Council Zoom meeting that got out of hand. So out of hand that parts of it were posted to Twitter, making it a viral hit.
According to the Evening Standard, things began to unravel when Chairman Brian Tolver got all uppity over the "legitimacy" of the 7:00 p.m. meeting. He was promptly kicked off it.
When another meeting was called at 7:30 p.m., Tolver again refused to acknowledge its legitimacy and two other council members were heard saying "f**k off."
Weaver, who clerked the meeting, tried to hold some semblance of order and run it properly, but Tolver wasn't cooperating. He told her to "stop talking," adding that she had "no authority here."
Weaver then removed Tolver from the meeting, placing him in a waiting room.
When Weaver tried to clarify that the rescheduled 7:30 meeting p.m. was "called by two councillors" and recommended that they "now elect a chair,” another angry idiot, vice-chair Aled, chimed in.
“I take charge,” he told Weaver. “Read the standing orders, read them and understand them!"
You can't make this up.
Meanwhile, Tolver changed his Zoom name to "Clerk," which, as everyone who has ever been on a Zoom call knows, doesn't mean anything.
"The chairman simply declared himself 'clerk' and notified everybody of the case," one council member pointed out, to which Weaver replied, "There is no way of stopping him from calling himself clerk. Please refer to me as Britney Spears from now on."
Jackie Weaver, ladies and gentlemen.
