Travel Tuesday: 5 Hidden Histories of Portland, Maine

Though the less popular of the two Portlands, Maine’s coastal city is nothing to scoff at. A central enough New England destination (clocking in only about two hours from Boston), you’ll hit the city fairly soon after crossing into Maine, and trust me -- it’s a bigger state than you think. While more compact than Boston and not as rustic as Portsmouth, Portland has exactly what you’d expect from an old, seaside city: cobblestoned streets, al fresco dining and a harbor filled to the brim with boats of all sizes. An added bonus to this destination, though, is its breweries; Portland has more per capita than any other United States city. While you beer hop, though, you find out a lot more about this humble little place.
