1. Lake Powell: Page, Ariz./Bullfrog, Utah
This place should look familiar: The crater-filled lake provided the backdrop for “Planet of the Apes.” Stretching between Utah and Arizona (one of which doesn’t recognize Daylight Savings, crushing your perception of time altogether), the lake is 254 square miles of open area for tubing, jet-skiing and red rock exploration. While there are plenty of campgrounds to pick from, primitive camping is encouraged for the more adventurous (me included -- it’s amazing). Hop on a speedboat, find an empty patch of sand and claim it as yours for the night. Just make sure you’re not hopeless at pitching a tent -- you’re on your own out there.
