It’s the most delicious time of the year in Hollywood. If you’re
lucky, you just might receive a special cake from movie legend Tom Cruise.
While on “The Tonight Show,” Cobie Smulders (“Stumptown”) gushed
with Jimmy Fallon over the coconut white chocolate dessert she has received
from the actor in the past for the holidays. Fallon, who’s also on Cruise's magical list of cake recipients, couldn’t
contain his enthusiasm for the dessert either.
“It’s unbelievable,” he said.
“It’s Tom Cruise deliciousness,” quipped Smulders.
Smulders loves
the cake so much, she makes it last until spring. "I leave it in my
freezer and it lasts until, like, March,” she said. “Like, I just slowly chip
away at this thing. It's so good. I don't know why. I'm not even a big sweets
person, but it's so good."
They both emphasized that you have to be on THE LIST to get this
cake, and membership to the list seems tenuous, as they both hoped to be still on
it this year. Smulders co-starred with Cruise in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”
in 2016, so we have high hopes she will receive her cake; Kirsten Dunst reportedly still gets the cake, after all (she calls it the “Cruise Cake”), and she hasn’t been in a movie with Cruise since “Interview with the Vampire” in
1994.
Renée
Zellweger starred in "Jerry Maguire" in 1996 with Cruise, and she traded cake stories with Graham Norton (who apparently didn’t even know he was on the cake list because
his office eats it before he learns that it's arrived). Angela Bassett told James Corden she ate the cake, but her husband Courtney
B. Vance did not.
That is the willpower of a stone.
Does Cruise own stock in a bakery? Last year, he told Corden he loves sugar, but he can’t eat it while he’s training (which, given his slate of
action movies, is probably all the time).
He said, “I instead send out the cakes
and wait for the calls. I’m like, tell me about it.” This vicarious enjoyment
is an exercise in masochism.
He did send Corden a chocolate cake, by the way,
for when he was hosting the Grammys, which made his suit fitting the day of
show a little iffy.
Can we order this cake ourselves and cut Cruise out as the middle(-toothed) man?
With some internet sleuthing, we think it’s from Doan’s Bakery in Woodland Hills, Calif., which happens to have a White Chocolate Coconut cake on their menu. According to one of our co-workers, They ship via Goldbelly.
As for a personal delivery from Cruise’s people, it seems
like we’re not getting a cake anytime soon unless we co-star with Cruise or
interview him. The co-star thing is a definite impossibility, but the interview
thing might pan out. Does anyone out there have his number? We know the bakery
does…
