Every kid deserves to have the Halloween costume of their
dreams, and Target is helping with their new line of adaptive Halloween
costumes. With their new adaptive costumes in the Hyde & Eek Boutique collection, all kids can be a unicorn, shark, pirate or princess thanks to a few special touches in the design of the affordable
costumes.
The princess costume, for example, is designed to be easy to put
on and take off in a wheelchair. A special cover completes the look by transforming
a wheelchair into a magical carriage. The unicorn and shark are not only soft,
cozy and tagless to accommodate sensory sensitivities, but they also have a
hidden front pocket for abdominal access, which is helpful for kids that have
feeding tubes.
According to Target, the reactions from families have been
positive toward the online-only boutique. The response was so great, in fact, that some
items initially sold out during pre-order, putting Target to work to try and restock
items in time for Halloween.
This is just another step in the right direction
for making all kids feel included, all the time. Target’s Cat and Jack children’s
clothing line has been adding more and more adaptive pieces that are also sensory-friendly, making dressing easier, or that include hidden flaps for a variety of medical
needs. Their Pillowfort home décor line, meanwhile, has everything from weighted blankets
to rocking chairs to add special touches to every kid’s room.
Caregivers of kids with special needs have been waiting for
this for a long time. Unless you’re an expert sewer or DIY master, finding
costumes that fit your children's exact needs can be difficult. Plus, at around $20
for, say, the shark costume, it’s a price point that can’t be beat. Though
Target has been leading the charge, more and more brands like Land’s End, Zappos and Tommy Hilfiger have been adding adaptive clothing, and Spirit Halloween is also offering wheelchair covers this season, too.
Hopefully this will be a trend that continues, since
Halloween should be a holiday that all kids can enjoy, regardless of their
needs.
