All’s fair in love, war and retweets. Unless you’re the University of Toledo, apparently.
The official Twitter account for the Ohio university sent out a now-deleted tweet promising a mascot switch to everyone’s favorite ogre should the tweet receive 500,000 retweets -- child’s play in the Twitterverse.
Yep, the college promised their students Shrek as their new mascot. So, you can understand their disappointment when the tweet was deleted and university admins said it was all a joke.
Media relations specialist at Toledo, Christine Billau, told USA TODAY Sports that the tweet was all in good fun and was only meant to generate social engagement.
It generated something, all right.
The “X retweets and I’ll...” campaign is nothing new to the social media outlet, but I would hope that should a user actually reach their goal, someone’s delivering.
Anyone remember Carter Wilkerson’s plea to Wendy’s? It’s been a year, but we’re still rooting for him.
