Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are over.
Even though there are various reports about whether or not they’ll actually get divorced and what actually happened, for the time being we’re treating this like every other break-up in the celeb world: a downright travesty. What makes this split a little different, though, is the extra juicy stuff happening at the same time. Namely, reality star/entrepreneur Kaitlynn Carter’s involvement.
Background
We don’t have time to go into the sordid details of Hemsworth and Cyrus (who, technically, is also Hemsworth
these days)’s relationship history, but I’ll skim over it as best I can:
these days)’s relationship history, but I’ll skim over it as best I can:
- Cyrus and Hemsworth meet on the set of “The Last Song” in 2008.
- They date from presumably then until about 2012, at which point they get engaged (she was 19, he was 22). I would also like to note that Hemsworth used the same ring jeweler (Neil Lane) as the “Bachelor” franchise does. Bad omen? Potentially.
- A year later, the engagement is off and Cyrus enters her short hair, no clothes, tongue-out phase.
- Rumors that Cyrus is dating model Stella Maxwell start circulating in 2015, and this is the first we hear of her budding fluid sexuality.
- Cyrus and Hemsworth are seen out together again in 2016, and soon her ring -- and the engagement -- is back on.
- December 2018 marks their impromptu and “secret” (it got out pretty easily) wedding.
- Cut to this week, when they both confirmed their separation.
Now to the other side of this: Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter.
Recently (like, this month recently), Jenner and Carter announced their separation. The two can currently be seen on MTV’s “The Hills: New Beginnings,” but perhaps the stress of being on television was too tough on them?
They’d been together since 2014, engaged since 2016 and (not legally, it turns out) married just last year, but Jenner’s rep cited amicable differences. By the time the separation was announced (I assume they delayed it so as to not jade their “Hills” viewers), sources were reporting that Carter was already seeing someone new. Well...
What happened?
So, Cyrus and Hemsworth split up after less a year of marriage, and as if that wasn’t devastating enough, there’s a twist -- it being that Cyrus and Carter recently made out in Italy.
The same day that a rep for Cyrus announced the news of her split from Hemsworth, photos of the women aboard a yacht getting verrry close surfaced.
The Instagram comments on posts with the news got spicy as well:
After the photos came out, Hemsworth posted his own personal statement, claiming that he won’t be making any comments to the media about the situation. While a lot of people are jumping to the conclusion that Cyrus was cheating on Hemsworth with Carter, and that’s what caused the split, other sources are saying that it happened months ago, anyway; to corroborate, Hemsworth has reportedly been without his wedding ring for a while.
And it’s getting even messier. Earlier this week, TMZ reported on some nasty rumors surrounding the reason for the break-up, citing disagreements between the couple based on drug and alcohol usage. It’s all just one big he-said, she-said, though, with nothing but love and respect coming from the people actually involved.
Meanwhile, sources close to Jenner claim that he’s known about Carter and Cyrus’ “friendship” for a while, telling Page Six that the women's romance has been going on for a few months. That, I guess, is consistent with Cyrus’ friends’ side of the story. Cyrus' sister Brandi serves as the mutual connection, here: Carter visited Brandi's home in Nashville recently to co-host her "Your Favorite Things" podcast (typically co-hosted by "Bachelor in Paradise" bartender Wells Adams). Brandi was also in Italy with them.
Then, early Friday morning, Cyrus released a song titled "Slide Away," which not-so-subtly references the dissolution of her relationship. The cover art for the single depicts a pool of water with liquor bottles and pills floating around, and she sings the lyrics, "I want my house in the hills/ Don't want the whiskey and pills/ I don’t give up easily/ But I don't think I'm down." While it could be a blatant reference to the substance abuse her "sources" are alluding to, should we be taking it that literally?

What do we think about it?
I couldn't care less if single Cyrus is shacking up with single Carter -- they're grown women who are clearly trying to figure out what they want out of a life partner. And as far as the rumors surrounding what caused the break-up, please. Even though no one except the two people involved will ever get the full story about what transpired, it sounds like they may have just rushed into married life (they're still pretty young at 26 and 29). I'm choosing to believe that the "Slide Away" allusions are metaphors for a lost innocence and I'll hear nothing else about it.
Mostly, I think it's just sad. Cyrus and Hemsworth were a love story that everyone looked up to, even if you aren't her biggest fan (which is understandable). The journey of two young kids falling head over heels, running into some obstacles but then finding their way back to each other was the resolution we were happy with! This just threw a wrench in it all, and we can only hope that they both either move on happily or figure it out with each other.
What does everyone else think?
Well, some people are loving the Carter love triangle situation:
Others are proclaiming the death of love as we know it:
And others are picking sides:
