As you gear up for the 144th Kentucky Derby this evening, ask yourself: are you prepared? Are your bets in? Have you picked out your hat?
Derby hats have become synonymous with the race, which was inspired by similar events in Europe. In order to compete with our friends across the pond, race organizers looked for a way to attract women to attend the races, only really known at that point for drinking and gambling.
Thus a full formal dress code was implemented at the races, and with that, the hats -- especially after the ‘60s, when hats became less casual to wear socially. Women flocked to the downs to show off their best and brightest caps.
But do we compare to the chic Europeans we drew inspiration from? Use the following list to determine who wears it better: racegoers or the royal family.
