When you're a little kid, most of your time in school is spent memorizing things. No matter if it's the Periodic Table or the ABCs, you managed to say it enough times to get it stuck in your head, never to leave again. Personally, I still have the home phone numbers of my childhood friends memorized even though, thanks to iPhone contacts, I'll likely never have to punch them in again.
