Today was a big day for Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Little HRH held tightly to her mother's hand as she joined big brother Prince George for her first day of school at Thomas's Battersea. George is an old hand by now, having attended the London school for two years already.
Charlotte (whose nickname is reportedly "Lottie") was greeted by Helen Haslem, head of the lower school. She'll go by Charlotte Cambridge rather than Princess Charlotte to avoid any formalities (enduring curtsy after curtsy can be very tedious). Prince William and Prince Harry used "Wales" as their last name at school -- their father is the Prince of Wales -- for the same reason.
A sparkly pink unicorn attached to Charlotte's bag caught everyone's attention, as sparkly unicorns tend to do. The fictional animal was delighted to be part of the princess's special day, per its statement:
"It was an honor to accompany Her Royal Highness to Thomas's Battersea. My most noble ancestors appeared on standards and crests, and today I am pleased to be attached to a backpack belonging to a prominent member of the royal family."
