We all remember the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding. It was the affair of the year and beautiful beyond words.
Turns out, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle tricked us! We knew that her “something borrowed” was the Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara that the queen lent to her for the wedding (this would also cover “something old,” since the brooch on the tiara dates back to 1893); her entire nuptials could be considered “something new,” as it marked her entry into the royal family and every new experience that came with it; and we assumed that the “something blue” was the aquamarine cocktail ring that once belonged to Princess Diana that Meghan wore to her reception.
Or was the ring a gift? Because in the new two-part documentary, “Queen of the World,” which will center around Queen Elizabeth II’s role as a global public figure and how her responsibilities will be passed down, we see some behind-the-scenes footage of Duchess Meghan admiring her custom Givenchy wedding gown and veil before it becomes part of a display in October -- and one particularly revealing conversation about her dress.
“Somewhere in here there is a piece of -- did you see? There's a piece of blue fabric that's stitched inside. It's my something blue,” she said in the film. “It's fabric from the dress I wore on our first date.”
OK, genius and romantic.
How we missed the swatch of blue in her 16 ½-foot-long veil, which was embroidered with flowers that represented all 53 countries of the Commonwealth (an important detail for Meghan), is beyond me.
“I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn't know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together,” she continued.
I think I speak for women everywhere when I say that this idea will follow bridal gowns for years to come. I mean, what makes your bridal outfit even more special than carrying a little piece of your journey to marriage within it? And it’s not like we haven’t been imitating Duchess Meghan since she began dating Prince Harry, anyway.
Most recently, ABC’s “Modern Family” has taken a stab at echoing the Duchess’s style.
Watch “Queen of the World” on HBO on Oct. 1.
