Back in October 2015, "Suits" star Meghan Markle sat down with HELLO! Magazine for an interview at the Dove Self-Esteem Project in Toronto, Canada.
The United Nations Women's Advocate was asked a series of questions ranging from which actor she'd like to work with to her best beauty advice.
Oh, and which prince she prefers, William or Harry.
"I don't know," Markle answered as she shrugged her shoulders and laughed nervously.
"Harry?" the interviewer suggested.
"Harry? Sure," Markle said, pushing her hair behind her ears as if to say, "NEXT QUESTION PLEASE."
HELLO! had no idea at the time that they were sitting on such a sound bite, one that would be covered by every major newspaper in the world a year later.
If you watch the video carefully, you'll notice that Markle was not comfortable with that question, leading yours truly to believe that though she may not have been romantically involved with Harry at the time, she had met the prince at least once.
Markle and Harry have at least one mutual friend in common. Designer Misha Nonoo (below) is married to Harry's friend and old schoolmate, Alexander Gilkes.
Nonoo is believed to have made the introduction, and sparks started flying back in May when Harry was promoting the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto (where Markle shoots "Suits").
Things between the Los Angeles native and Harry are now serious, and Harry went so far as to confirm that Markle is his girlfriend in a statement via Kensington Palace.
Though it's not common for royals to address matters concerning their personal lives, Harry felt compelled to address speculation about the relationship since Markle was being harassed in the media, online and even in person.
"This past week has seen a line crossed," the statement read. "His [Harry] girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public - the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments."
"Some of it has been hidden from the public - the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life."
Royal fans were surprised that Harry made such a public declaration, since he is very protective of his privacy.
Though the press may have complied with the palace on matters of harassment, last week one photographer snapped Markle walking back to Harry's cottage at Kensington Palace after doing some grocery shopping.
Don't expect Markle and her prince to get engaged anytime soon, though. It could be a few years until the Northwestern graduate even meets Her Majesty.
About a month after she and Harry first connected, Markle met up with Piers Morgan in a London pub. The interview for Mail on Sunday was done over a dirty martini, and Markle teased that there was a "persistent" man in her life.
After it wrapped, Morgan had nothing but compliments for the American who captured Harry's heart.
"She's got beauty, brains, charm and a great sense of humour," Morgan said.
"Meghan Markle is perfect princess material."
