Have you heard of the buzziest new beauty ingredient? It’s
called bakuchiol, and it is derived from the psoralea
corylifolia seed. Bakuchiol, based on the Sanskrit name of the bakuchi
plant, has been part of Eastern medicine for centuries, though it only
hit the market in 2007.
It’s a powerful plant with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory
and anti-bacterial properties. It has also been found to work a lot like a
retinol product, but without the drying and irritation. In 2018, a random double-blind
study found it similar to retinol in effectiveness to improve wrinkles and
hyperpigmentation. The future of the plant is bright, as it is being studied to
help fight cancer and strep infections.
Currently, it is the belle of the beauty community, especially
for those who want a gentler, yet equally effective approach to fighting common
skin-aging effects. It can be used day or night and won’t react with the sun,
like retinol does.
