Out with Townsend, in with Armstrong-Jones!
Matthew Goode has been cast as Princess Margaret's ex-husband, Anthony Armstrong-Jones/Lord Snowden, on season two of "The Crown," according to Refinery29.
Goode most recently starred on the final season of "Downton Abbey" as Lady Mary's interest, Henry Talbot. He's also appeared on "The Good Wife" and "Death Comes to Pemberley" as well as in films like "Chasing Liberty," "Imagine Me and You," "Leap Year" and "Watchmen."
Princess Margaret and Armstrong-Jones (who was given the title Lord Snowden by the Queen) were married from 1960-1978. Prior to meeting the British photographer, Princess Margaret had ended a very public relationship with her father's former equerry, Group Captain Peter Townsend.
The love affair was chronicled on season one of the Netflix series, which won Golden Globes for Best Television Series -- Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Drama (Claire Foy).
Some viewers thought it was a juicy storyline the writers conjured up, but in fact the princess and Townsend did have a very real relationship that nearly caused Margaret to give up her title and any ties to the throne.
Filming for season two is already underway, but fans shouldn't get too used to the current cast. Back in December, Foy told Vulture that she and co-star Matt Smith (who plays the Duke of Edinburgh) are "out" after this season.
"I don’t know how they’re planning on doing it, but they’re such an incredible bunch of directors and producers that it’s gonna be different and exciting," Foy said. "It’ll be original. I can’t wait to see where it goes. I’m so honored to have been involved at this stage. I couldn’t be happier really. There’ll be no 3 a.m. makeup call for me!"
