It's 1977. Steven Spielberg takes out a full-page ad to congratulate his friend and fellow iconic moviemaker George Lucas. The original “Star Wars” just passed “Jaws” at the box office.
Since this show of good sportsmanship, studios have been creating fun illustrations of their movies’ characters cheering on the competition once they’ve been superseded. James Cameron eventually got in on it when “Titanic” bypassed a "Star Wars" film in 1998, then Universal, and on it went with Variety ads.
More recently, "Jurassic World" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" have been the big winners.
When Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” exploded ticket sales and broke records to achieve the highest-grossing opening weekend in history (cashing in at $257 million), it warranted this cartoon, courtesy of Lucasfilm, for beating out “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” by about $9 million.
When "Avengers: Endgame" passed the "Titanic" box office stats in May, Cameron added this cheeky illustration to the mix.
In a not-so-surprising development, "Avengers: Endgame" also beat out Cameron's "Avatar." While Jimmy is probably scrambling to get "Avatar 2" out in hopes of getting his crown back, the movie's official Twitter account posted this gorgeous poster of Iron Man hanging out in Pandora with some good-natured Na'vi shade:
Which studio will break records next?
