1. "The Night Watchman" by Louise Erdrich
Based on the author’s own grandfather, a Native American night
watchman in North Dakota, this story follows Thomas, a watchman at a jewel-bearing plant fighting for the rights of fellow Chippewa in 1953. Also on the
reservation is Patrice, a plant worker searching for her missing sister and
child, as well as a cast of others struggling to survive in the impoverished yet
tight-knit community. The novel gives an intimate look into the souls of those
who were voiceless -- until now.
