In fairness, Bates was attempting to break the Guinness World Record for fastest marathon run in a landmark costume -- which is apparently a thing.
Bates, whose run racked up over £3,500 for Alzheimer's research in the U.K., was just short of breaking that record, clocking in at over three hours and 54 minutes (the current record is held at three hours and 34 minutes).
"Having run the London Marathon four times previously, this year I decided I wanted to do something different, have a bit of fun and wear a crazy costume," Bates told the Huffington Post. "It’s going to be very hard to break the record with the costume I’ve chosen. I could have made it smaller and easier to carry, but I want it to be a real challenge."
At least he made decent time! Pun very intended!
