We know that Kylie Kristen Jenner is supposed to be this mega fashion influence, and sure, some of her looks do inspire (this oversized shirt and thigh-high boots combo is, for example, awesome), but most of the time we're wondering where the heck she plans on wearing half of her outfits. Like this cut-out top -- you can't tell me that this was actually a practical piece of clothing:
Jenner's latest piece, though, lies somewhere in the middle. She complemented her recently-dyed berry-red hair with square, white sunglasses, a chain-link bag and a massive, ivory puffer coat.
Barring the obvious weirdness of this choice (it being a comfortable 70 degrees in southern California right now), there was something tingling at my memory upon seeing this jacket. What could it be...
Ah, yes.
NFL quarterback Tom Brady first debuted his giant sideline jacket during the AFC championship game in 2017 against the Pittsburgh Steelers at New England's home stadium in Foxboro, Mass. Where it gets cold. Obviously, quarterbacks move around a lot less during a football game than most players, so it's understood that Brady would want to stay warm (and more importantly, keep his throwing arm warm). But the sheer size of this jacket made Twitter go off, and the jacket quickly became a meme in and of itself.
The jacket has made its return a few times since then, but now that Brady is a Tampa Bay player, opportunities for JacketGate will be few and far between this season (even Super Bowl LV will be played in Tampa Bay).
Jenner may be trying to evoke the Brady look with this new jacket -- it's definitely just as big. Even her sister Khloe commented, "Couldn’t you afford a bigger jacket??"
Of course, who are we to tell Jenner what is and isn't fashion? These monster jackets are trendy right now, even if they're not exactly practical. Imagine trying to drive a car in this thing? It creates blind spots.
Still, brands like Aritzia, Free People and Mango are all in on this giant jacket trend these days, and celebs like Rihanna have gotten in on it, too, so perhaps Brady was the style guru all along.
Perhaps he can make a custom giant jacket through his UGG partnership, sponsored by Kendall + Kylie. Just a thought!
