Kathy Berman, the wife of longtime ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman, was killed in a car crash in Woodbury, CT. on May 9. She was 62.
The accident, which also killed another driver, occurred around 2:15 p.m., according to the Hartford Courant. State police told the paper that Berman's Lexus SC 430 rear-ended Edward Bertulis' Ford Escape X; they are investigating the possibility that Bertulis, 87, suffered a medical emergency right before Berman's car ran into his.
Berman's car reportedly veered off the road before landing upside down in a small body of water. Bertulis was rushed to Westbury hospital, where he later died.
Berman, who was a school teacher, is survived by her husband of 33 years, as well as their two children, Meredith and Doug.
ESPN president John Skipper released a statement following Berman's death:
"This is a devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend. Chris is beloved by all his ESPN colleagues and for good reason: He has a huge heart and has given so much to so many over the years. We know how much his family means to him and all we can do at a moment like this is give him the love and support he will surely need at this hour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris, Meredith, Doug and the entire family."
Berman has been with ESPN since 1979, and hosted "Sunday NFL Countdown" for 31 years.
