Fun fact: Mother's Day in the United Kingdom is observed every March. Not-so-fun fact: The world is in the midst of a pandemic, which means that loved ones who are fortunate enough to celebrate Mother's Day with their moms in the U.K. can't (or shouldn't, since people are being strongly advised to keep their distance in order to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus).
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared four photos today to celebrate mothers "new and old" and, of course, acknowledge that this year is an especially challenging one for those who are separated from each other.
One of the photos features a young Carole Middleton holding an infant Kate and the drawing is one Prince George made for HRH for Mother's Day (the kid's got talent!).
More challenging than the self-isolation people are experiencing is the day itself for those who've lost their mothers, in particular Prince William and Prince Harry. One of the four photos included above features the late Princess of Wales with her sons, something Kate makes sure to include Mother's Day. We've added another one below.
Back in 2009, William spoke publicly about Mother's Day being painful ever since losing Diana. He had agreed to become patron of Child Bereavement UK, which supports children who have lost a parent or families who have lost a child. At the time, the charity was launching a "Remember on Mother's Day" campaign, which resonated with the prince.
"I too have felt, and still feel, the emptiness on such a day as Mother's Day. Never being able to say the word 'Mummy' again in your life sounds like a small thing," William said in a speech he gave to members of the charity at an art gallery in central London. "However for many, including me, it is now really just a word -- hollow and evoking only memories."
Since having his own family, William hasn't spoken publicly about how his perception of Mother's Day has changed, but we hope they've become a little brighter.
