Saying that last night's NFL opener was different would be an understatement. There was a moment of silence for equality in the country; no post-game handshakes, cheerleaders or mascots; only a fraction of fans in the stands; and masks as far as the eye could see.
Except on Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who opted for a face shield as he shouted plays from the sideline.
Immediately after turning the game on, I turned to my household and commented both on Reid's dedication to his health and the potential for visibility problems. I mean, I can't even wear my eyeglasses with a mask without fogging up, and here was Reid yelling directly into the shield plus wearing glasses. And on a rainy, foggy day in KC, at that.
Of course, I wasn't the only one to notice the potential problem. Twitter sounded off on Reid's face shield choice, and even the coach himself admitted that the safety measure will need some extra finagling before next game.
"I didn't do very good with that thing. It will be better with that next time. It will be fixed," he told CBS Sports.
But while we applaud Reid's sticking to his guns, let's also enjoy the ensuing jokes that came out of the game (which the Chiefs dominated, BTW, scoring 34 points over the Houston Texans).
Luckily, as reigning Super Bowl champs, the Chiefs have a bye week ahead of them, so Reid has plenty of time to figure out the situation.
