Hops and Ales: What Makes a Beer an IPA?

Beers come in all shapes and styles, from lagers to ales to stouts and whatever the hell Narragansett's Del's Shandy is (hint: it's not good). Everyone naturally gravitates toward a specific type of beer -- my faves are Belgian or wheat beers -- where things like sweetness, hop and crispness play a factor. Probably the most divisive brew is IPA, or India Pale Ale. Notoriously hoppy and the crown jewels of most craft brewers, you either swear by IPAs or stay far, far away. What about IPAs are you familiar with?
