National Mall Transforms Into a Field of Flags In Lieu of Crowds on Inauguration Day

Today, Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, with Kamala Harris beside him becoming the first female vice president. While Inauguration Day usually draws massive crowds in Washington, D.C., the COVID-19 pandemic has required some changes; only select VIP guests will be able to gather at the U.S. Capitol this afternoon. But to commemorate the occasion, the National Mall has been transformed into the Field of Flags. Nearly 200,000 flags fly on the lawn, representing the American people who would have been celebrating with the incoming administration today.
