Let it soak in a water/bleach concentrate.
The purpose here is to kill any microorganisms that may still be lingering on your pumpkin’s surface. One of the biggest reasons pumpkins quickly rot is the presence of bacteria, so first thing’s first: Cut off the source. Mix about ⅔ cup of bleach in with water and submerge the pumpkin completely. Soak for at least two hours and for up for 24, but dry it off thoroughly when it’s done soaking to prevent mold.
