1. Digging holes
When the pups are consistently coming back inside the house with paws covered in dirt and leaves, it’s simply a matter of redirecting their attention. If they already have plenty of toys, chews and opportunity for exercise (they’re more likely to go digging if they’re restless), try to show them an area where they are allowed to dig. Maybe that’s a designated corner of the yard or perhaps you invest in a sandbox; take some time to go out with the dog and train them to hang out just in those spots when the urge hits. If they continue hitting the unwanted areas, add some deterrents: bury some flat rocks that will get in their way; sprinkle some pesky citrus peels, vinegar or cayenne over the area; or add a motion-detecting sprinkler.
