When the streets of Houston started to flood this past weekend, Gallery Furniture owner Jim McIngvale and his team sprung into action.
Nicknamed "Mattress Mack," McIngvale is a legend in the city, famous for his quirky commercials and more importantly, his philanthropy.
McIngvale and the Gallery Furniture team took delivery trucks "that can get through the high water really easily" to rescue those hit hard by Hurricane Harvey.
"All day on Sunday we went around rescuing people out of high water stranded on overpasses. We brought about 200 people into the store that way," McIngvale told CNN via Skype interview from his Grand Parkway location.
Awaiting evacuees at the entrance to the store were donations from locals, including fresh towels, shoes, clothing and toys.
Over 300 people are safe and dry inside the showroom, sleeping soundly on comfortable mattress that have been made up with blankets and pillows. Magdalena Marez and her fiance Zachary Gasser were blown away by McIngvale's generosity.
"We never stepped foot in (one of his stores) and now I'm just like, wow, I mean, they opened up the doors. Like nothing. He didn't even second guess it," Marez said. "He was just like, 'Let me help you.'"
Also getting some rest in between rescue shifts are 60 members of the National Guard.
"(The troops) are sleeping on the best Tempur-Pedic mattresses that are on the market," one of McIngvale's employees, Dave Marchione, told CNN. "And I'll tell you what -- those are some happy soldiers."
With the help of local restaurants, McIngvale is able to feed evacuees. He's also set up portable showers so that they're able to take a hot shower.
No stranger to helping out (he donates furniture to families in need every Christmas), McGingvale said that his company can afford the $40,000 bill that comes with keeping the store open to help out those in need.
"What we can't afford is to cause these people to lose hope. We gotta give them hope," McIngvale told CBS This Morning (interview below). "This is what my parents would have done," he said, choking up.
