Back in 1993, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy put a spell on us. The Sanderson Sisters are synonymous with Halloween (mostly thanks to Freeform’s 13 31 Nights of Halloween over the years) and countless people dress up as the tricky trio every year on Oct. 31.
The film is turning 25 this year, and we’d rather be cursed into a cat’s body like Thackery Binx than miss a good excuse for a party. Vanessa Hudgens and Jordan Fisher hosted a two-hour special that was filmed at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which holds the final resting place for more show biz icons than anywhere else in the world. Talk about a theme.
All October, fans have been visiting Max and Dani’s house in Salem, Mass. and using “It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus” for various photo captions all across the internet. Suffice to say, no one’s forgetting about Winifred, Sarah and Mary anytime soon.
The special, which airs tonight on Freeform, includes exclusive interviews with the entire “Hocus Pocus” cast (except Binx in cat form, probably), along with musical performances from Jordin Sparks and Dove Cameron and a themed costume contest judged by Sharon and Kelly Osbourne and Margaret Cho. What a crowd.
All of this hubbub just proves that there’s zero need for a remake of the spooky film, and even though every TV series, book and old film are getting redone these days, even Midler has slammed the idea -- she anticipates it’s going to be “cheap.”
Watch the Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET -- just don’t let a virgin light any candles.
