Not only does a hanging basket use space effectively, it gives you an excuse to go to a macrame class -- and who doesn't want to learn how to knot things? Attach a hook to your ceiling, or get an extending hook that can go off a wall. Choose your basket, and pick a plant that suits your fancy.
Don't forget to mind the lighting and what type of plant might thrive best in that area. Putting succulents in a shady spot, for example, is a bad plant move, and will eventually end in you questioning whether you are actually capable of caring for living things. No one wants that.
