D.B. Weiss and David Benioff love to play with us. They claim that the secret to the ending of “Game of Thrones” is hidden in their new curated Spotify playlist, titled “The End Is Near.”
The showrunners’ second collab with Spotify (their last playlist was called “Songs of Ice and Fire” as an ode to the book series that inspired “Game of Thrones”) is 50 songs of blood-pumping tunes that’ll make you want to wield your Valyrian steel sword while simultaneously assuming the fetal position and trying not to lose your mind (such is the life of GoT viewers).
Can we truly glean any information from things like Kanye West’s “POWER” and St. Vincent’s “Cruel”? Maybe not, but no doubt songs titled “Dire Wolf,” “Listen to the Lion” and “Girl From the North Country” will have us in a theory-spinning tizzy before long.
In the week leading up the final season’s premiere, there’s been enough cast appearances (“SNL,” of course, takes the cake), media coverage and recaps to keep most of us sated, so Weiss and Benioff said they just wanted to throw their hats in the ring as far as preparation.
“We were looking for songs that made us feel the way the show made us feel. There’s variety in there -- Rage is not Johnny Cash. But they both have a deep inherent power,” they said.
Now that we’ve got your morning commute for the next week (and for the entirety of season 8) settled, you may be asking: Where else can I get my GoT fix?! Luckily, Spotify went the extra mile and made specific playlists for each of the major players in Westeros and beyond consisting of show composer Ramin Djawadi's scores throughout the past seven seasons. Careful about who you reveal your favorite combination to, though -- a lot can be said about a person depending on if they’re a Stark or Lannister. Vote the best playlist/house to the top!
Spoiler: Most playlists have “The Rains of Castamere” on it, because these people are one step away from sadists.
