On Wednesday, Rolling Stone revealed its newest cover star: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The cover photo is of the politician standing in his office, seemingly ready to get to work saving the world at a moment's notice. It's ironic in that he appears to be the poster boy of the All American Man, coming to us by way of Canada.
Accompanying this photo, which is equal parts stoic and inviting, is the text: "Justin Trudeau / Why can't he be our president?" Rolling Stone is far from the first to ask this question. For the nearly 2.9 million Americans who didn't vote for President Trump, the liberal Trudeau is the proverbial "grass is greener on the other side" world leader. The fact that he is also close with former President Obama, and shares many political beliefs with the 44th commander in chief, only strengthens this yearning for Trudeau.
But there's one glaring problem with this: Trudeau is a politician, not a pop star, and he comes with his own set of problematic political stances. Sure, he might not be banning groups of people from the country or trying to take health care away from millions, but he's far from perfect.
Ignoring this fact just because he's the better alternative (with dreamy blue eyes to boot) gives him unbridled power. Citizens must keep an eye on all elected officials, even the ones with skyrocketing approval ratings (which Trudeau doesn't exactly have). Otherwise, how are we supposed to know when things go sour?
So let's stop talking about how cool Trudeau is for a second and start talking about a few of his more problematic political stances.
