Being the new person at work is no menial task. You must navigate your first few days/weeks with a certain attitude -- an aura that exudes confidence yet not cockiness.
You must first be a good listener and take in your surroundings -- figuring out who the head honchos are, who's going to be your new work wife/husband, who's going to be difficult to work with and who to avoid. You have to contribute to conversations enough so people know you're social without trying to become the center of attention right away. It's a fine balance.
