Yes, distilled water is actually better, because it doesn't have any of the chemicals or heavy metals that some tap water can have.
After that, it's simple! Turn the machine on, cover your head with a towel and steam for 5 to 10 minutes. For best results, most professionals recommend you follow with a mask that will help remove impurities, since it will be able to get into your pores so much easier now that they're open. Then, moisturize like your life depends on it to lock in all the moisture you just added.
