I was today years old when I learned that Emmy-nominated Emilia Clarke isn’t just the formidable Daenerys Targaryen in “Game of Thrones,” but she’s also the sweet and quirky Louisa Clark from “Me Before You”! I know I’m late to the game, it’s fine.
Henry Golding, on the other hand, I was very much aware was both Nick from “Crazy Rich Asians” and Sean from “A Simple Favor.” Again, two very different roles but the same incredibly attractive person.
So, the general consensus is that we love Clarke and Golding separately, but now we get to love them together, because they’ve just announced their new Christmas movie -- and it’s called “Last Christmas” (swoon).
Paul Feig, the man who gave us “A Simple Favor,” “Bridesmaids” and even a couple of “The Office” episodes, is set to direct. If we know anything about Feig, it's that he can't resist a little humor behind his work -- "A Simple Favor" was wickedly satiric -- so I think it's safe to say we'll get a little rom-com vibe here. He’ll be joined by Emma Thompson and Bryony Kimmings writing the screenplay and Universal Pictures helming the production. If you didn’t know Thompson wrote for films, either, you’re not alone -- but she was also behind the screenplay for films like “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” “Nanny McPhee” and 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” The more you know!
All we're sure of so far is that the film will be set in London -- fab for the London-born Clarke and Surrey-raised Golding -- and center on a holiday romance. TBH, it’s been ages since we’ve seen a really good commercially-produced Christmas love story. I mean, we have the Hallmark Channel’s Christmas Keepsake films pretty much year-round, but everyone knows those satisfy a different kind of craving. What have we seen since “Love Actually” (2003) and “The Holiday” (2006)? Nada.
Let the new rom-com era blaze on!
