Joining the ranks of Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga as hosts-turned-musical-guests, Donald Glover and his counterpart Childish Gambino took the “Saturday Night Live” stage last night and people. Were. Impressed.
Glover’s appearance couldn’t come at a better time, with his role as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story” on the horizon and the second season of his show “Atlanta” wrapping up soon.
After a slew of buzzworthy sketches, including a spoof merging Kanye and “A Quiet Place” that you need to see, Childish Gambino rocked out surrounded by his talented friends on stage (Zoe Kravitz played a mean game of dominos after introducing him).
What's coming up for Glover and his multiple credits?
Glover plans to retire Childish Gambino after his next album
After the Grammys back in January, when he won for Best Traditional R&B Performance, Glover confirmed that Childish Gambino will be no more following his next album. "I’m really appreciative of this. I’m making another project right now, but I like endings, I think they’re important to progress,” he said.
He tried out for (and was rejected by) “SNL” twice before
Yep -- one of these auditions being to play Barack Obama in a skit in 2008. “I auditioned for this show twice. That’s not a joke, I’m just still pissed,” he said in his monologue.
Tina Fey hired him as a writer for “30 Rock”
Glover was 23 and living in a dorm at NYU when Fey caught wind of a few scripts he’d written. He wrote for the sitcom for three years while making cameo appearances as well, earning the Writers Guild of America Award in 2009.
Glover will also star alongside Beyoncé and a slew of incredible performers in the live-action remake of “The Lion King,” which is slated for release next summer.
